I have a hearing impairment:
I am 28 years old and was born deaf. Communication has always been a problem for me. However, I am a college graduate and also have obtained a master’s degree.
I am fluent in sign language, as well as reading lips. People often treat me differently because they feel uncomfortable communicating with me. They act as if I am unintelligent simply because I cannot hear.
I am very knowledgeable in my field of study and have recently begun looking for a job. I have attended a few interviews but have not been offered a position. I feel as though people are afraid when they meet with me and try to communicate, and that the information is not being taken in correctly. I have had difficulty getting interviews because people are uncomfortable with me on the phone with my TTY. I really could use some help in finding jobs in my field. I think if someone could explain my credentials to an emloyer before the interview and theyk new that I can read lips before meeting with me, I may have a chance.
How do I convince employers that I would be good for a job? How do I make them understand that I am qualified for the position? How do I make them feel more comfortable communicating with me?
I need Help!
