I have a learning disability:
I am 23 years old; I have been done with high school for 2 years now. I kind of miss school and all my friends. I didn’t read or do math very well and was in the Special Ed. Class room with only a few other kids. Sometimes I would get really mad and kick things and throw my books when I got upset. They told me I had learning problems. I tried a few jobs my teacher got me while in school, but nothing I liked and they weren’t “real” jobs anyways.
I moved out on my own now and have a roommate. I like to watch movies, have friends over and stay up late. A few of my friends have jobs and get paychecks; I think I would like to get a paycheck too.
I am not sure what kind of job I can do or would like. I really do not like getting up early in the morning. The only way I would have to get to a job would be to walk, take the bus or a taxi. I have never taken a bus other than the school bus and I know taxi’s cost a lot of money.
Some jobs I see would make me count money or run a cash register, sometimes I have trouble figuring out how to count my money after I cash my SSI check and I am trying to buy groceries. I would need someone to show me how to do that well.
I do not have very nice clothes to wear to work; maybe I could get a job that had a uniform? I get nervous in front of people I do not know and would not like going to a job interview by myself. I have picked up a few applications when I have seen “Help wanted” signs at the store I go to and the restaurant I like. I have tried to write on them, but I can’t read it all, it is really confusing so I give up.
I would like to get a job that would make me feel proud and earn a paycheck every week to buys things I like and eat out more. I might even make some new friends.
